On Saturday, January 6th, colourful Epiphany ( Święto Trzech Króli ) processions filled the streets of many cities across Poland. The celebrations were joyful, lively and full of music. This special holiday was marked in more than 900 places, not only in Poland but also around the world.
The Feast of Epiphany, also known as Three Kings’ Day, is one of the oldest and most meaningful Christian holidays. It is based on the Gospel of Matthew, which tells the story of the Three Wise Men who travelled from the East to Bethlehem to honour the newborn Jesus Christ. Their names were Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar. They brought symbolic gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh.
Every year, people celebrate this day by taking part in colourful processions and singing traditional carols. Participants of all ages join the events, wearing paper crowns, while actors dressed in rich costumes play the roles of the Three Kings.
Epiphany processions are organised not only in Poland, but also in countries such as the United States, Germany and France, as well as in Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon and Zambia.
